Computing the Past – Utilizing Historical Data Sources for Map-Based Retrospective Landscape Research

چکیده
This paper presents a method for the extraction of high level compound forest cover information from manually produced scanned historical topographic maps. The contained forest cover is a unique data source for GIS-based land cover change modelling. As a case study, this work focuses on the so-called Siegfried Map, the Swiss national topographic map series of the 19 century. The map is of low graphical quality which is related to closely spaced map symbols, overlapping /intersecting hand-drawn graphics and text as well as ill-defined transitions to background through blurring. To conceptually order the extraction process, which is achieved by multi-step recognition, the concept of saliency is introduced. By finding salient features in the image the choice of the adequate next step is facilitated. The recognition steps to be carried out are character recognition by two-stage template matching, line detection by sequential line tracking and continuation, and finally structural analysis for hierarchical classification. The extraction of the forest area based on the recognized structures is carried out by semantic expansion whereby the meanings of objects, which are encountered during expansion, trigger different actions. Index Terms – Historical topographic maps, text/graphics separation in maps, line detection, structural pattern analysis, semantic processing, saliency.

Digital Historical Maps in Physical Planning
Background The historical maps have become a more common and important source of information in administrative work within the cultural heritage sector in Sweden. The usage of historical maps has also increased in untraditional sectors, such as infrastructural planning, as the interest in environmental issues has increased in past years. The character of the historical map is that of; knowled...

Historical maps are precious materials, which show various spatial distribution of land use, streets and so on of the historical importance at the time the maps were produced. They may be a dependable source of information regarding concepts of city planning of the past. In analysis of historical maps, the most practical method is to compare them with the present ones, for instance, by overlayi...

متن کاملRe-Envisioning Tarascan Temporalities and Landscapes: Historical Being, Archaeological Representation, and Futurity in Past Social Processes
We apply a phenomenological perspective on landscape and geographic information system (GIS) applications in order to theorize how human perception and agency were likely implicated in processes of the formation of the late pre-Hispanic Tarascan State of West Central Mexico. The relatedness of landscape features in space or place-based perception has been well theorized; here, we further consid...

The two major aims of this study are (1) To test the performance of the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) to quantify past landscape changes using historical maps and related written sources, and (2) to use the LRA and map reconstructions for a better understanding of the origin of landscape diversity and the recent loss of species diversity. Southern Sweden, hemiboreal vegetation zone. ...
